Scope & Content This collection is comprised of immigration documents, handwritten letters, and English translations of those letters. Materials consist primarily of correspondence between Charles Ekdahl, an immigrant to Scandia, Minnesota who served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and his family. All letters are accompanied by English translations.
Biographical Information Charles Ekdahl was born Carl Ekdahl Johannesson in Dadesjö, Kronobergs län, Sweden, in 1829. He married Stina Gustafsdotter and they emigrated to the United States in 1854. They settled in Scandia, Minnesota and had 10 children. Charles Ekdahl served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was engaged in Sherman's historic Savannah Campaign. Throughout his service and after he wrote extensive letters home. A more complete biography is included in the collection materials in the Series "Commentary."
